No-Li Tasting 5/15

Back in the 1980s, when craft beer was still called microbrew or that weird hippy beer, Mark Irvin fell in love.  First, as a military brat living with his family and getting a taste of the rich beer culture of Germany, then as a homebrewer, and then on to brewing for Coeur d’Alene Brewing and Hale’s Ales, Mark fell head over heels for the art and science of brewing beer with character.

In 1993, after years of invaluable brewhouse experience, Mark decided to crack the top on his own small venture, Northern Lights Brewing Company, in his native Spokane.  “I could have brewed in Seattle, but I never could have passed up the chance to brew in my hometown and create my own independent style,” says Irvin.

For eight years NLBC made its home in Airway Heights as a production brewery producing primarily draft beer and self-distributing kegs to local restaurants and bars in the Spokane area. In 2002, the NLBC moved to its current location on the Spokane River and began operating the pub in addition to the brewery. The philosophy of the beers naturally spills over into the pub’s offerings: globally inspired, local sourced. That manifests as crisp, regional produce, ingredients raised and produced by our neighbors, and Inland Empire wines to complement our ales.

One other item Mark sourced locally - at the beer-famous Viking Tavern no less - was his wife Stacy. It was love at first beer and Mark is quick to admit NLBC would not exist without his life and business partner Stacy.

In 2012, John Bryant, a craft brewery veteran of 20 plus years, found the magnet that is Spokane irresistible after a long absence from his home state. John helped lead the revolutions at Deschutes, Odell, and Oskar Blues breweries, yet it took less than a pint of Mark Irvin’s ale for him to realize there was something special going on NLBC.   “I grew up in Washington, went to WAZZU, and married a Spokane gal,” says Bryant. ”I pretty much bleed crimson and gray. And beer. Really good beer. This opportunity to work alongside master brewer Mark Irvin and move my family back to the Inland Empire is already proving to be the most rewarding move of my career.”

Curiously, about the time John and Mark were proving how craft beer has a way of bringing great people together, they were getting an uncharacteristically cold shoulder from another craft brewery on the East Coast that also had a claim on the name “Northern Lights.” With 1800 plus craft breweries these days, innocent trademark lap overs are not uncommon, but typically these can be resolved in an attorney-free setting over a couple of beers. After multiple calls and letters though, all Mark and John got back was the silent treatment. No Lie.  But, rather than losing sleep or brewing time over it, they inspired to shorten Northern Lights to No-Li – which also makes a subtle nod to how they candidly brew their beers and run their business. Plus, since they got the Silent Treatment, they wryly decided that would make a great name for their Pale Ale.

Whether you’ve been drinking Northern Lights since 1993 or you’re imbibing in your first ever No-Li ale, Mark, John and the crew hope the pride they have in their craft and in their hometown shines through.

Full Sail 5/8

full-sail-banner.jpg

" For years, we’d been thinking and talking and dreaming about the idea of becoming an employee-owned company. So many people had put so much work and love and dedication into Full Sail, and we wanted them to share the same pride of ownership we did. But that’s not the whole story. The reason we started Full Sail in the first place was to build a company that was completely different from the ones where we’d previously worked. It wasn’t about business as usual. It was about finding our calling in life -- about truly appreciating our “human resources,” and balancing work, life, family and friends in a way that makes life truly worth living. It was in that spirit that we became an independent, employee-owned company in 1999, divvying up the company between the 47 of us. Of all our accomplishments, this is the one that makes us most proud. So here we are. Ever humble, ever grateful, ever amazed that we got here in one piece. Still a mix of beer geeks and boardheads (not to mention mountain bikers, surfers, Ultimate fanatics and powder hounds). Still independent. Still trying to find that perfect balance between art and commerce, work and play, inspiration and perspiration. Thanks for reading. And next time you’re in Hood River, stop by for a beer. "

HOP VALLEY TAP TAKEOVER 5/2

HOP-VALLEY.jpg

HOPVALLEYY If you were paying attention in hop history class, you know that Lane County was once the hot bed for hop growing.

Oregon’s first commercial hop-growing operation was started in Buena Vista (Polk County) in 1867, but by 1880 most of the state’s hops were being grown in Springfield.  In fact, the original Hop Valley Brewery and Restaurant was built on land that once was the epicenter of the hop-growing world.  In addition to Springfield, hops were being grown in Santa Clara, Crow, Coburg and Goshen. (Legend has it this is where the phrase “a hopping place” originated, but it is our legend and thus is, more than likely, a complete fabrication.)

And we at Hop Valley are proud to use their hops in our beers.  That’s the way it has been since we opened the doors to our original brewery on Springfield’s hop-hallowed grounds Friday, February 13, 2009.

Friday the 13th, we know, right?  Perfect day to start a business.  But if we have accomplished nothing else at Hop Valley, we have at least demonstrated that even the worst timing can’t doom the best ideas.

Our original idea was pretty simple.  Four lifelong Oregonians with knowledge of the local beer market and a better understanding of craft beer just wanted to make some good beer. We found the perfect place to start smack dab in the middle of the old hop central, and the rest is history, albeit a very short history.

We never anticipated it would turn out this way so soon – rapid expansion, two locations, statewide distribution and lots of great-tasting, award-winning beer.

Join us this Friday at Uptown Market for a tasting of epic proportions!  Get ready for an 11 beer tap takeover featuring the brews of Hop Valley.

Tasting starts at 5pm.  Be there or be square!

Mike and Lisa Hinkley took their interest in the craft beer industry to a new level in 2002 when they founded Green Flash Brewing Company. Former pub owners, Mike and Lisa jumped into brewing, and in 2004 renowned brewmaster Chuck Silva joined the team.

With Chuck on board we began brewing premium style beers, modern twists on traditional styles, and our beers began to develop a following. Cutting edge brews, Green Flash Brewing Company’s beers don’t fit traditional guidelines, instead we let our hybrid, benchmark beers blaze their own trail.

Located in San Diego, CA, we specialize in brewing assertive and distinctive beers, such as our West Coast I.P.A.: an award-winning beer whose wide acceptance has helped define a category. We also brew seasonal, collaborative and barrel-aged beers.

Our award-winning beers are on draft and bottled and are available throughout the United States in bars, restaurants and retail outlets.

Ninkasi Tasting 4/18

Brewery-Ninkasi.jpg

Brewery--Ninkasi

The ancient Sumerians worshipped the beer they made and praised the Goddess Ninkasi for the miracle of fermentation. As one of the first-known communities, the Sumerians began to forgo hunting and gathering for an agrarian existence, establishing the first foundations of modern civilization. They understood the value of beer in their communities and relied on the brewery as a pillar and hub of social connectivity. Additionally, beer and the fermentation process provided potable water, nourishment, health, and joy. It was the catalyst for written language and education; all valuable contributors to an evolved quality of life and living.

Today, Ninkasi Brewing Company is dedicated to brewing the highest quality craft beers in support of culture, community, and the uniqueness of each individual and their passions—while evoking as much enjoyment as possible along the way! We believe in and are committed to sharing experiences that create value for our customers, our partners, and our communities in service to our core purpose: to Perpetuate Better Living. Beer is a staple of civilization. Believe in the Goddess!

Georgetown Tasting 4/10

Georgetown Brewing is Roger Bialous and Manny Chao... a couple of beer loving local boys who brewed up a pretty darn tasty beer in the garage (actually it was the back deck, but garage sounds better). We decided to chuck our jobs... all for beer. Yee-haw.

In all seriousness, we're living out our dreams. We love beer. We love brewing. Here we are. Life's too short not to follow your beer, er... I mean passions. The Zen philosopher Basho once wrote, " a flute without holes is not a flute and a donut with no holes is a danish."

Anderson Valley Tasting 4/11

AVBAStout.jpg

  anderson_valley_banner

Founded in 1987, the Anderson Valley Brewing Company brewed out of a 10-barrel brewhouse, located in the lower level of its brewpub, The Buckhorn Saloon. Gleaming stainless steel vats brewed and fermented barley and other specialty grains to create outstanding ales, porters, stouts, and wheat beers. These brews began as a dream of Kenneth Allen to create the smoothest tasting ales available anywhere.

When the demand for our award winning ales exceeded the capacity of our 10-barrel brewery below the pub, we built our present 30-barrel facility at the corner of Highways 128 and 253, a mile from the center of Boonville. That was in 1996, and this brewery saw us through a dramatic period of growth, which included the introduction of a 12 ounce bottling line and a production level of 15,000 barrels in 1998, twice the amount brewed in 1997.

Yet, the brewery’s growth was outpacing its larger space and expanded capacity. In 1998, construction began on a state-of-the-art, three-story Bavarian-style brewhouse. The centerpieces of the brewhouse are gleaming 100- and 85- barrel copper brew kettles rescued by Ken Allen from a defunct German breweries during a trip to Europe in 1995. The new brewhouse went online in August of 2000.

By 2010 Ken Allen decided to retire and began to search for a successor to continue the Anderson Valley commitment to quality. In April of 2010 the brewery sold to industry veteran Trey White. In September of that year Fal Allen (former general manager 2000 – 2004, no relation to Ken) returned to the brewery as brewmaster. White has focused on innovation and quality, introducing the Bahl Hornin’ Series, expanding the barrel aged program, and increasing brewing capacity.

AVBAStout

Complexity.  Aged for three months in Wild Turkey Bourbon barrels, this luxurious stout has a deep ebony hue and a beautiful mahogany head. The woody, vanilla-like notes imparted by the barrels mingle with aromas of fresh baked bread, toffee, and espresso and envelop the rich chocolate and roasted barley flavors with a fine bourbon character.  Our exclusive partnership with Wild Turkey gives Anderson Valley a world class, consistent source of barrelage, allowing our brewers to explore new frontiers in barrel-aged craft beer.

Gigantic Brewing Tasting 4/5

Gigantic-Pint.jpg

Gigantic-Pint

Gigantic Brewing Company is an independent, crafty brewery located in the Southeast quadrant of the Peoples Republic of Portland. Brewer/Owners Ben Love and Van Havig are veterans of the Oregon brewing community.

At Gigantic we only do two things: make the best damn IPA in Portland, Oregon and produce seasonal, exciting, flavorful beers, most of which will be brewed only once. Our goal is simultaneously to create new interpretations of classic styles and to ignore those same style guidelines completely and brew whatever our creative natures produce.

We hold ourselves to a simple principle – Never Give an Inch. We vow to start small and (stubbornly) stay small, focusing our efforts on making exceptional beer, rather than a lot of beer. When you drink Gigantic, know that we didn’t just put our names on the label – our effort, imagination, and dry wit are in every bottle.

Look for Gigantic on tap at your local, and in 22oz bottles at your favorite place to buy good beer. Better yet, come visit us at our Tap Room and Champagne Lounge and Taste the Awesome!

Cheers! Ben & Van

21st Amendment Tasting 3/27

21stamend.png

21stamend

In 2000, Nico Freccia and Shaun O’Sullivan founded the 21st Amendment Brewery in San Francisco’s historic South Park neighborhood. The popular brewpub is now at the heart of the new city center, just south of the financial district and only two blocks from the San Francisco Giants baseball park. In addition to eight rotating taps of multiple award-winning hand-crafted house beers, the pub has been voted “Best Brewpub”, “Best Burger” and “Best Happy Hour” by the San Francisco press.

Freccia and O’Sullivan met in early 1995 in San Francisco. Both had just moved from southern California to the Bay area when they heard the calling of beer. O’Sullivan, a former photographer and paralegal, “traded his suits for boots and was saved by beer”. He moved to Berkeley and took a job as assistant brewer at the Triple Rock Brewery there. Freccia, a writer, actor and, by extension, restaurant professional, was also an avid homebrewer. Frustrated with the lack of beer culture in the L.A. area, he moved to San Francisco and began writing for the Celebrator Beer News, the west’s largest beer publication. Freccia and O’Sullivan met, became friends and, while sitting together in a summer class on brewing science at UC Davis, hatched their plan for what would become the 21st Amendment.
